Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) uses iSIGHT from Engineous
Software to teach new graduate level class in Multidisciplinary
System Design Optimization
Georgia Tech and MIT sign up for Engineous Software's
iSIGHT Academic Beta Program
CARY, N.C., December 11, 2002 -- Engineous Software, provider of
integration, automation, and design optimization software, and related
strategic services, announced today the results of the new graduate
level Multidisciplinary System Design Optimization class being offered
by the Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics at MIT. Engineous
Software donated full versions of iSIGHT software and provided training
and access to the technical support staff to assist students in
optimization assignments and semester term projects.
The class consisted of 25 graduate students, primarily from the
Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics, Mechanical Engineering,
and the Engineering Systems division. iSIGHT was applied to a diverse
set of class projects including design of micro-aerial vehicles,
lightweight portable UAV wing optimization, automotive vehicle platform
optimization, multidisciplinary framework for effective stakeholder
decision-making, and wind turbine optimization.
MIT professors Olivier de Weck and Karen Willcox team-developed the
curriculum for the new class. "Overall, we believe that iSIGHT
software is an incredibly useful tool for students," said Olivier
de Weck. "Since its installation in the Design Studio we have
received a number of requests to use iSIGHT on various research
projects going on at the university, as well as an interest in a
student version of the software."
Faculty and students identified the following benefits of iSIGHT's
optimization techniques:
- "It is very user friendly, which limits the mistakes in
programming the optimization scheme."
- "iSIGHT allows for many types of different optimizations
in a robust and efficient manner."
- "iSIGHT is very helpful since it provides several optimization
techniques, and therefore helps comparing the results we get with
different techniques based on the same software base."
- "It is the only solution I found to optimize multivariable
problems."
Based on the feedback from MIT and other Engineering schools, Engineous
recently launched an iSIGHT Academic Beta program. Program participants,
like Georgia Tech and MIT, will ensure the functionality meets the
needs of students and faculty. The full version of iSIGHT Academic
is targeted to launch in mid 2003. Academic institutions interested
in the program can contact jeff.bond@engineous.com for more details.
