Dassault Systèmes Announces New Composite Crush Simulation Technology

These graphics are associated with the 03-December-2008 press release from Dassault Systèmes.

Image 1. A mass of 1150 kg moving at an initial velocity of 9.1 m/s impacts a complex composite cone structure in an experimental sled test. Crushing of the cone progresses to a point where a large fracture develops suddenly in the transition region between the cone and its backup structure.

Image 2 & 3. CZone for Abaqus results predict well both the crushing response and the sudden fracture outside the crush front. Acceleration histories of the sled mass correlate well when comparing experimental data (blue) against simulation results (green).

Image 4. Crushing of a composite cone structure with a rigid insert bonded into a cutout in the cone is simulated in CZone for Abaqus. As the impactor reaches the bonded insert, a fragment including the insert and portion of the cone breaks away from the structure, comparing well against a similar fragment that is produced in the experimental test.

Image 5. The composite front wing for an F1 race car is impacted against a rigid pole. Progressive crushing of the wing occurs as the pole penetrates through the wing. Significant forces are also transferred through the structure, causing the wing to then break away from the vehicle.

Dassault Systèmes Announces Accelerated Simulation Performance with Microsoft’s Windows HPC Server 2008

These graphics are associated with the 15-Oct-2008 press release from Dassault Systèmes.

Image 1. Using 128 cores of a 256 Core Intel Harpoon Cluster, R Systems used this model of an automotive rear differential-axle model (courtesy of Dana Holding Corporation), to evaluate the performance of Abaqus FEA Software and Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008. Abaqus FEA enables the analysis of how bearings and bolts perform during assembly of the differential-axle as well as how the full assembly performs under various operating loads (input from the vehicle transmission with output to the axles that drive the wheels). The simulation which normally solves in a little over 2 days with 8 cores, solved in 3.5 hours using 128 cores.

Dassault Systèmes Announces Abaqus BioRID II Crash Dummy Model from SIMULIA

These graphics are associated with the 18-March-2008 press release from Dassault Systèmes.

Image 1. The new Abaqus BioRID II model is used to evaluate the risk of neck injury during a rear-end collision. In this rear-impact simulation, the dummy’s reaction is shown at 0, 110, and 250 milliseconds. The Abaqus model, along with the physical test dummy it represents, is used by automotive OEMs and seat suppliers to design head restraint systems that minimize whiplash injuries that can often occur in low-speed rear collisions.
