Abaqus UK User Group
The Abaqus UK User Group has been in existence since 1982. The Abaqus UK User Group committee, made up of Abaqus users from commercial and academic customers in the UK, has historically organised a variety of seminars and projects, and working closely with the staff at SIMULIA UK organised the annual Abaqus UK User Conference.
The committee usually meets 3 or 4 times a year for general discussion about Abaqus usage and presentations by:
- SIMULIA UK on upcoming releases, technical issues, business strategy, etc.
- Committee members on key industrial requirements, enhancements, deficiencies, etc.
The current committee members are from Advanced Analyses Ltd., AMEC, British Energy, Corus plc., DAMT, Frazer- Nash Consultancy Ltd., Jaguar Land Rover, Perkins Engines Co. Ltd., University of Nottingham, Qinetiq, Rolls Royce plc. and Serco.

Committee’s Objectives
In 2007 the objectives and organisation of the committee underwent a review due to commercial pressures on both SIMULIA UK and the members of the User Group committee. One of the outcomes from this review was that the Abaqus UK User Conference, now the UK Regional User Meeting, is now fully underwritten by SIMULIA UK. In exchange for the Group’s loss of the revenue from the conference, SIMULIA UK committed to running one low-cost seminar every year, and carrying out one development project, of 1-2 weeks duration, free of charge, every year, for the general benefit of UK Abaqus users.
The Abaqus UK User Group committee has the following objectives:
- To provide the opportunity to exchange ideas and experience amongst Abaqus users.
- To influence the short and long-term development of Abaqus and its support in a collective fashion.
- To agree, in consultation with SIMULIA UK staff, a topic for a low-cost seminar and project that they feel will benefit the Abaqus UK users.
Projects and Seminars
During 2008 the Abaqus UK User Group and SIMULIA UK funded two projects and a low cost seminar, which was run twice due to high demand. These projects and seminar were partly funded with the last of the money that the group had accrued from previous Abaqus UK user conferences. Future projects and seminars will now be funded under the above agreement.
The committee would be interested to hear of any small projects that would be of use to the UK Abaqus user base, that could be funded under the above agreement and made freely available once complete. Recent Abaqus UK User Group/SIMULIA UK funded projects have been:
- Analysis Reporting Script: Python script to collect and format data for presentation.
- Odb File Splitter Script: Python script to allow a new Odb filtered on frames and variables to be created was developed in 2007. This was further enhanced in 2008 to allow filtering on regions, such as element sets.
- Import of FE data from an I-DEAS file into an Odb file for viewing in Abaqus Viewer was also developed in 2008.
The committee would also welcome suggestions for areas of interest for the yearly low cost seminars. Past seminars have included:
- Substructures and Submodelling
- Linear and Non-Linear Dynamics
- Constitutive Modelling
- Obtaining a Converged Solution
- CAE and Viewer (2007)
- Automated Postprocessing with Abaqus (2008)
