About the Presenters

Mark A. Christon
Mark is the Director of CFD Technology. Mark has a background in computational fluid dynamics, shock hydrodynamics and computational mechanics. He received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Colorado State University in 1990. Over the past 20 years, he has made contributions to the areas of time-domain acoustic fluid-structure interaction, time-dependent incompressible/low-Mach fluid dynamics, reacting flows, large-eddy simulation using unstructured grids, meshfree methods, and numerical analysis. Mark has been a staff member at Lawrence Livermore, Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories where he helped to pioneer the development of scalable, parallel, unstructured-grid algorithms for solving large-scale problems in multiple disciplines including fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, magneto-hydrodynamics, and reacting flows. He is an active member of the editorial board for the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids.

Matt Dunbar
Matt is the Director for Performance Technology at SIMULIA. He joined the company in 1993 and has spent much of his tenure working on parallelization of the Abaqus suite of products, initially for shared memory architectures and more recently for distributed memory architectures. Matt is responsible for ensuring that the Abaqus products keep pace with and adapt to new hardware. In a related role, Matt also works closely with the SIMULIA IT team in designing and implementing an HPC development environment. Matt holds a Masters degree in Aeronautics from Stanford University.

Bruce Engelmann
Bruce is responsible for extending SIMULIA’s technology leadership position and guiding technical software development in response to customers' long-term business requirements. He has directed the development of Abaqus/Explicit and other leading advanced mechanics technologies for the company. Bruce has worked on automotive applications involving development of zero-emission vehicles, and was instrumental in obtaining the first FMVSS certification of an electric sedan and pickup truck in the United States. He was awarded two design patents in crash engineering management systems. Bruce was also a lead developer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for six years. Bruce graduated with a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University in 1986.

David Fox
David is the Director of Mechanics Technology. David joined SIMULIA In 1991 to work on finite element mechanics development, concentrating on element formulations. During this time, he also served as Development Group Manager for Abaqus/Standard. In 2003, David’s role changed in the CTO Office to evaluating and guiding SIMULIA’s long-term mechanics technology strategy. David has a Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics from Stanford University.

Asif Khan
Asif is the Product Manager for Abaqus/CAE. He joined SIMULIA in 1998. He started in the Enhancement and Support group for two years and then transitioned to Product Management. He held the position of Abaqus/CAE product specialist for five years and assumed his current role of Abaqus/CAE product manager in 2006. In his current role, Asif is responsible for capturing, communicating, and tracking customer requirements for each release of Abaqus/CAE. Asif has a Masters degree in Structural Engineering from Purdue University.

Satya Musti
As the SIMULIA General Manager for Simulation Lifecycle Management (SLM), Satya is responsible for the global sales, technical support and services of SLM as well as supporting SLM sales by the DS PLM Sales channels. Satya has over 23 years of experience in the PLM industry; he spent the first 19 years of his career at SDRC in various positions spanning Product Development, Technical Marketing and Sales. From 2006 to 2009 he was Vice President of Sales at MSC Corporation. Satya has a Masters degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University and an MBA from the University of Cincinnati.

Frank Popielas
Frank Popielas is Manager Advanced Engineering in the Sealing Products Group of Dana Holding Corporation. Since joining Dana in 1994 he held several positions in application engineering and R&D, with a main focus in R&D on developing and implementing CAE. In this capacity he is also the Lead of the Dana CAE Council. His work also focuses on material and material properties development, like coatings and fretting theory with focus on automotive and heavy duty applications. He majored with a Master of Science in Engineering in theoretical physics from the Moscow Institute for Steels and Alloys, Russia in 1994.

Alex Van der Velden
Alex manages the Isight and the SIMULIA Execution Engine products and contributes to the overall SLM product strategy. In 1992 he started work at Airbus and introduced the use of optimization in many aerospace projects. In 1995 he founded Synaps, Inc. an early pioneer in the field of process integration and design optimization software. After Synaps was acquired by Engineous Software in 2004 he took over the responsibility for the development of the Isight product. Alex holds a Masters from Delft University and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Stanford University.

Eric Weybrant
Eric is the Product Manager of the Abaqus analysis products. He began his career at SIMULIA in 1999 and has held positions of increasing responsibility over the years, including Customer Service Engineer, Development Engineer, and Product Specialist where he performed market research and technical gap evaluations. In his current role as Product Manager, Eric is responsible for capturing the requirements for each release of Abaqus. Eric has a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maine.
