Application: Engineers
at DaimlerChrysler Aerospace, led by Dr. Martin Stettner,
Development Engineer for DASA Military Aircraft, wanted to
optimize the mass of a wing structure to meet static and dynamic
aero-elastic constraints. Traditionally, engineers have used
the static and aero-elastic codes separately. To solve the
overall wing design optimization problem, they needed a way
to combine the results from specialized analysis codes in
a single framework. To solve this problem, Stettner and his
team took results from both types of analysis codes and developed
response surface models within iSIGHT. These models were used
to optimize the performance of the model system. The end result
demonstrates that seemingly incompatible analysis programs
can be coupled with iSIGHT to optimize a design based on combined
results.
